A variety of travel insurance policies are
available today on the internet or the market. One can easyily get
confused with so many offers. However, majority of travel insurance
policies have certain basic benefits which are common and usually
provide coverage for:
Trip
cancellation/interruptions
Trip cancellation/interruptions due to a variety of
reasons like death of an immediate family member, weather, sudden
illness, bankruptcy of airliner, jury duty, terrorist activities
etc.
Medical
costs
Costs incurred for doctor visits, medicines,
treatment, surgery etc and some policies even provide coverage for
costs of medical evacuation to nearest medical facility.
Accidents
Accidents or calamities like earthquakes, tsunami,
storms etc and the related costs.
Baggage
Loss
Costs incurred for loss of baggage and valuables is
also covered by most travel insurance policies. These are especially
useful when going out for a shopping holiday for antiques, valuables,
jewelry or electronics.
Buying a policy for a family works out cheaper.
Furthermore, it works out more cheaper if you buy online. This is
possible because Inurers have less overheads like intermediary
commission etc.
Getting travel insurance is as good as securing your family’s
health. It is making sure that everyone is properly protected.
Why Buy Travel Insurance?
First,
do you have home insurance, car insurance, health or life insurance? If
so, why did you buy it? Your answer would be to be protected from
uncertainty. It gives you assurance that in case of a catastrophic
event for which you are unprepared, help will be there.
When travelling, most people do not consider travel insurance. Why?
Because so far these most people have not faced any problems and assume
will never face any problems. Yes, we all wish that we have
uninterrupted holiday but can we guarantee that? Travelling these days
is full of uncertainties. Tourism is a fast growing industry globaly.
Likewise terrorism, flight crashes, accidents, wars, disease, natural
calamities etc are also on a rapid increase. If you have travel
insurance, and may never have to access it, but just having it can
really give you peace of mind. There are many incidents, circumstances
or situations that can arise like -
- Cancelation of your trip
- Interruption in your plans
- Possible return home early
- Seek emergency medical treatment while traveling.
Importance of
Buying Travel Insurance - Few Common Examples
- You and your family arrive at the airport for a
connecting flight, only to find that your flight has been cancelled.
How do you get your family home? A travel insurance policy would be
very helpful.
- Yours or your family member's luggage was lost
which contained medical insulin inside. Obviously the need to locate
that piece of luggage is priority. What could you do?
- It’s your first visit overseas, and your
passport and wallet are stolen. This is a terrible situation to be in.
Where would you turn for emergency cash, and very importantly, how will
you get your passport replaced?
- You or your spouse or both have an accident and
adequate medical treatment is not available. Who will help arrange and
pay for a medical evacuation?
A solid travel insurance including medical cover policy would go a long
way towards easing the difficulties of such situations. As mentioned
above, such situations could be rare and do not happen to most people,
and may not ever happen to you. However, if you have adequate travel
insurance you can relax and have a worry free trip.
Take your time and look around to see what is offered and hope
you’ll find the travel insurance you need.
What You Should Consider
When Buying Travel Insurance
Compared with choosing where to go and what to do on holiday, getting
travel insurance is a chore most people would prefer to do without.
This helps explain why so many holidaymakers continue to buy overpriced
insurance from travel companies or travel agents - or go away without
any insurance at all.
But with hundreds of thousands of people every year needing medical
treatment, losing luggage, or having to cancel or cut short trips for
unforeseen reasons, not having travel insurance could turn a holiday
disaster into a financial trauma.
So, with literally hundreds of policies available, how do you go about
choosing the best deal? Here we have
outlined some Tips that may help you when buying travel
insurance:-
Worst-case scenario
If you can financially afford the worst-case scenario then may be you
don't need travel insurance or may be you don't need a comprehensive
policy.
Medical coverage
Make sure the policy you are considering provides adequate medical
coverage, including medical evacuation coverage. Depending on where you
are travelling to, such covers are important just in case you need
medical care in a place where the best treatment available is below the
standards This can happen if you fall ill in a developing country or
even on a cruise ship. Check that a policy will cover you against
injury when doing any sports or adventurous activities that you have in
mind - these could be when you'll most need cover! If it's not clear
whether you're covered, ask: there's no point in having insurance that
doesn't cover you and an insurer may offer additional cover at no or a
small extra cost.
As well as not being covered against injury when doing
sports,
jet-skiing and other motorised sports are often not covered under the
'public liability' section of a travel policy - so if you hurt someone
or damage property, you may find yourself in financial trouble.
Insurers expect you to declare all pre-existing medical conditions and
will often exclude related medical claims. However, if you don't
declare a pre-existing condition you risk having all claims invalidated.
Existing insurance
Check your existing insurance policies for possible coverage. There is
no sense in paying more for what you already have - example you may
have "all risks" cover in your home contents insurance covering theft
and loss, so yor baggage is covered. Some credit cards companies offer
you travel insurance. But don’t be fooled: with most cards
it’s free 'travel accident insurance', which is nothing like
normal travel insurance. Bear in mind too that if your credit card - or
in some cases bank account - does offer free travel insurance, there's
a good chance you're overpaying for the plastic or for the account.
Check with your
credit card companies to see what type of Travel Insurance they offer.
Usually, if you pay for your travel arrangements using credit card,
most popular credit card companies may offer trip cancellation
insurance and more.
More
expensive is not necessarily better
Surveys show that policies sold by high street travel agents can be up
to three times the price of some of the best-value policies available
from specialist insurers. For a week in Europe, you could pay
£10
or less; for annual cover just £40, according to the regular
surveys of best-buy policies by Which? magazine. For a 30 days free

Frequent travelers
If you are a frequent traveler, you should consider annual travel
insurance policies, also known or termed as multi-trip travel insurance
policies. Annual policies can be relatively cheap when compared to
single-trip travel insurance policies. The more holidays you have, the
more worthwhile annual travel insurance can work out. As a basic rule
of thumb, make more than two overseas trips a year and annual travel
insurance is worth considering: it may also cover you for business
trips and saves the hassle of arranging insurance for every trip.
Some policies will charge higher or extra premiums where they see
additional risk, others won't - so shop around. Over 65s are often
charged more, but some policies will offer standard rates up to the age
of 75 or even 80.
E111 forms
These are available free from the Post Office and entitle you to the
same medical treatment as nationals when you are in a European Union
country. However, that might still mean significant costs.
Read the fine print
Try to understand and know what you are buying, so read the fine print.
Make sure that you understand what the company considers to be a
legitimate reason for cancellation or interruption. If the list is too
restrictive, maybe you should consider another policy.
Buying from your
travel agent or Tour Operator
Don't restrict yourself to buying only from your travel agent. They may
probably only have one company's product(s) available, and mostly it's
there for your convenience, but that convenience can be quite costly!
Sometime you are offered FREE travel insurance. If your travel company
or agent offers free travel insurance, bear in mind that, in effect,
you may still be paying for this through a more expensive holiday.
