Insurance Overview
As
more people are now
able to access the Internet, finding a cheap
deal on insurance is not as difficult as it once was. Consumers are
able to use
a range of tools and resources such as price comparison sites to get
the best
deal on their cover, and in many cases, this can save them a small
fortune
because the cost of cover can vary widely from one insurance firm to
another.
Bikers in the UK can enjoy a wide range of
insurance options to
provide them with protection against a range of issues and
eventualities, and
with some good deals on offer from a wide range of insurance providers,
it is
possible to enjoy protection and peace of mind without having to break
the bank
when it comes to premiums.
The cost of insurance cover can vary quite
dramatically, based not
only on the level of cover that you take but also on the insurance
provider and
the type of cover that you take. There are various other factors that
may
affect your insurance premiums, depending on the type of cover you are
taking
out. You can get some very good deals on insurance cover these days,
and this
means that you can enjoy valuable protection without having to pay over
the odds.
In order to ensure that you get a good deal on your
insurance cover it
is important to compare the different prices on offer from a variety of
companies – the difference in premiums can vary quite
dramatically from one
insurer to another so it can really pay to take the time to make
comparisons.
However, as well as comparing
the price of your insurance cover you
will also need to look at the level of cover and whether this will be
adequate
for your needs. Having insurance that does not provide adequate cover
for your
needs is pretty pointless, and it is worth paying a little extra to
ensure that
you are adequately covered no matter what type of insurance you are
taking out.
Comparing insurance policies and articles online makes it easy,
convenient, and
fast to find the right cover at the right price, and you can even
arrange your
cover online in most cases, saving yourself time as well as hassle and
money.
How to reduce your motorbike
insurance
Insurancecan be one of
the biggest expenses you have to pay out when owning a bike, apart from
the bike itself. So we have put some tips together to show you just how
you could lower the cost your motorbike insurance.
1. Get A Garage
If your bike is kept in a secure garage rather than parked on the road
outside your house, then you could save up to 10% off your insurance.
2. Improve Your Riding
By going back to school and completing an approved advanced riding
course like the one run by the Institute of Advanced Motorists, you
could get discounts of up to 10% with certain schemes.
3. Say No to Thousands of Miles
By limiting your mileage you could receive discounts of up to 12% off
your annual insurance premium.
4. Dump Your Pillion
By not carrying a pillion, you could earn some extra discount of your
basic insurance policy.
5. Get Secure
Motorcycle theft is responsible for around 40% of all motorcycle
insurance claims. The use of a security device such as an
alarm/immobiliser, may act as a deterrent to thieves. Bennetts offers
up to 10% discount on riders who have recognised and approved security
devices fitted to their bike.
6. Female Riders
If you are female and own a bike, you could get up to 10% discount off
insurance
7. Choose Voluntary Excess
You will have a compulsory excess on your insurance policy. However by
choosing a voluntary excess also, it could lower your basic insurance
policy.
8. Spread the Cost
Instead of paying one lump sum, why not take advantage of being able to
spread the cost over the year by setting up a Direct Debit.
9. Length of Ownership
Make sure you tell us the correct date of when you first owned the
bike. Some schemes offered by Bennetts give discounts depending on
length of ownership.
Winter
Clothing Recommendations for Bikers
William
Hughes, Devitt’s Deputy Managing
Director at the time, says
“Being in the insurance industry, we get to see the harsh
reality of the perils of the winter season. It is more important than
ever for bikers to wear the right gear to protect them from the
increased risks. The trouble is many people think that safety comes at
the expense of style but these days this is simply not true. Biking
gear has come a long way over the last 10 years so there
doesn’t need to be the challenge of fashion versus function.
Gone are the days of Hobson’s choice of stiff black leathers.
The range available is much more varied and caters for the different
needs of riders – men and women - racers and commuters, the
trend-followers and the more conservative. The wrong clothing can be
the difference between life and death. The right clothing can help keep
you safe – and
look great too.”
As
winter road conditions present new challenges and hazards to the
motorcyclist, the need for correct clothing is ever important to allow
full concentration on riding.
Be Seen – The days are darker for longer at this time of year
and bad weather also impedes visibility, which creates an even stronger
case for wearing high visibility and reflective clothing. High
visibility vests now come in a variety of guises, but the ones with
zips as opposed to Velcro tend to be a better option for bikers as it
stops the vests from being blown apart at motorway speeds. Reflective
tape can also be used on both your motorcycle and crash helmet to
increase night time visibility.
Be Snug – If you’re not prepared, wet and cold
weather can make biking a miserable experience and also potentially
dangerous. On long journeys the onset of hypothermia is a real winter
risk as temperatures plummet, but there is a wide range of weatherproof
materials available which retain heat and provide protection. For the
ultimate in winter warmth, electrically heated gloves, socks and
waistcoats are an option.
Be Supple – Man-made fibres and softer leathers (such as
Kangaroo) are more flexible and lighter, which is important for both
safety and comfort. If you plan on wearing waterproofs or textile
jackets over leathers you may want to consider getting a size larger
than normal to ensure you have enough room to move about on the
motorcycle. Remember too that thicker winter gloves will give less
‘feel’ for your motorcycle’s controls
over thinner summer ones, and may take a little time to get used too.
Be Safe – With CE approved body armour now more common in
suits and accessories, today’s bikers can be protected from
injuries while enjoying the benefits of comfort, visibility and
fashion. Even if you are not wearing race leathers, there’s
no excuse for not having CE approved elbow, shoulder, knee, hip and
back armour in place as many winter outfits now come with this or make
provision for it.
Be Stylish – Of course safety is the main priority, but we
all want to look our best. The range of kit is very wide so everyone
should be able to find a style that suits them while providing full
protection. Many textile suits also provide enough room for you to wear
them over every day clothes, handy for the commuter in shirt and
trousers or if you just want to be in jeans and a jumper when you
arrive at your destination.
